This guide will show you, how to use WinSetupFromUSB to create a bootable USB Flash Drive including all Windows source files, plus the following installation of Windows XP. Compare to the different USB_Multiboot versions, WinSetupFromUSB comes with a Graphical User Interface (GUI) and is in my opinion easier to use.

Here you can get the latest version of the program and you will also find many detailed informations about WinSetupFromUSB.

I’ve tested this guide with a 32-bit version of Windows XP and a 64-bit version of Windows Vista and it worked flawlessly.

Prerequisites:

All you need is:

a USB Flash Drive with at least 1GB of storage

the original Windows XP Setup CD

WinSetupFromUSB

If you use nLite to slim down your version of Windows XP, please keep the following in mind:

DO NOT remove “Manual Install and Upgrade”
under Operating System Options!

I also recommend to integrate Service Pack 3 into your Windows XP source files.

1. Preparations

Download and install WinSetupFromUSB. Default installation path is C:\WinSetupFromUSB.

Create a new folder with the name WINXPCD in the root directory of drive C:\ and copy all files from your Windows XP Setup CD into this folder. Depending on your version of Windows XP, the content of C:\WINXPCD should look approximately like this:

The following files will show you, which Service Pack is already integrated into your CD:

WIN51IC.SP1, Sevice Pack 1

WIN51IC.SP2, Sevice Pack 2

WIN51IC.SP3, Sevice Pack 3

2. Start WinSetupFromUSB

Connect the USB Flash Drive to your PC and start WinSetupFromUSB. It should show up under USB Disk Selection :

3. Select your Source Path

Click on Browse under Windows 2000/XP/2003 Source and navigate to the folder with your Windows XP Source Files. It should be C:\WINXPCD:

Click OK and C:\WINXPCD should show up under Windows 2000/XP/2003 Source :

4. Format USB Flash Drive

PeToUSB or HP Format Tool are used to format the USB Flash Drive. There is no need to download these programs seperately as they are already included in WinSetupFromUSB.

USB Flash Drives up to 2GB should be formatted with PeToUSB in FAT16, USB Flash Drives with 4GB or more with HP Format Tool in FAT32.

I will use PeToUSB to format my Kingston Data Traveler with 2GB.

In the main window of WinSetupFromUSB click PeToUSB under Format target using to start the program. The USB Flash Drive should show up under Destination Drive. Check USB Removable, Enable Disk Format and Quick Format. Uncheck Enable File Copy under File Copy Options :

Click Start and answer the following two questions “Continue?” with Yes.

All existing volumes and data will be lost!

If everything goes well, the message “Operation Completed Successfully!” should appear. Click OK and close PeToUSB.

The process with HP Format Tool is similar.

5. Copy Windows XP Source Files

To start the process of copying the Windows XP source files to the USB Flash Drive, click GO in the main window of WinSetupFromUSB. Depending on the write speed of your USB Flash drive it may take a while to copy all files.

At the end the following notice about the Windows installation process should be displayed:

Click OK and close WinSetupFromUSB with EXIT.

6. Windows Installation – Part 1

Connect the USB Flash Drive to your PC and turn on the computer. Press ESC at the boot screen and you will be able to select the USB Flash Drive as your boot device from the boot menu.

The ASUS Eee PC 1000H ships with 1GB RAM. Please take a look at the following guide, if you want to upgrade your machine and you are not so sure about the individual steps and what kind of memory module to by.

All i can say: “It’s really easy!”

The 1000H has only one Slot for Standard 200pin DDR2 SO-DIMM, so you have to remove the existing 1GB memory module that comes preinstalled and exchange it with the new 2GB memory module.

Currently these are the most common DDR2 memory speeds:

533 MHz (PC4200)

667 MHz (PC5300)

800 MHz (PC6400)

The Mobile Intel 945GSE Chipset supports a maximum memory speed of 533MHz (PC4200). There will be no advantage in memory speed if you use 667MHz or 800MHz Memory, as they will always be downclocked to 533MHz.

What we need:

a small Screwdriver

a 200pin DDR2 SO-DIMM with 2GB

Note:
To avoid electrostatic discharge, ground yourself by using a wrist grounding strap or by periodically touching an unpainted metal surface (such as a connector on the back of the computer).

1. Remove Battery and Upgrade Panel

Turn off the Eee PC, place it with the bottom face up on a soft cloth (to protect the top from scratches) and remove the battery.

Unscrew the marked screws with your screwdriver and place them aside. Now you can gently remove the upgrade panel that covers the hard drive and the single DIMM slot with the preinstalled memory module.

2. Remove preinstalled Memory Module

Use your fingertips to carefully spread apart the marked securing clips on each end of the DIMM slot until the module pops up. Now you can remove the memory module from the slot.

3. Replace new Memory Module

Before you insert the new memory module, align the notch in the memory module with the tab in the DIMM slot. Then slide the memory module firmly into the slot at a 45-degree angle, and rotate the memory module down until it clicks into place.

4. Replace Upgrade Panel and Battery

Align the tabs on the upgrade panel to the bottom of the computer and gently replace the upgrade panel. Then replace and tighten the two screws on the upgrade panel and slide the battery back into the battery bay.

5. Power up Eee PC

Turn on the Eee PC and immediately press “F2″ to enter BIOS Setup. On the first screen under System Memory you should see “Installed Size: 2048MB”. If everything went fine you can exit BIOS Setup with “Exit & Save Changes”.

If you miss this step, it may be possible that the system configuration information will not be updated and your operating system still shows only 0.99GB of installed RAM.

This guide will show you how to restore the Eee PC 1000H (with Windows XP Home SP3) to factory default without the use of an external DVD-Drive. There is also no need to build a BartPE (Bart Preinstalled Environment) from an Original Windows XP CD.

Prerequisites

All you need is:

a USB Flash Drive with at least 4GB of storage

the original ASUS 1000H XP Support DVD

WinRAR

PeToUSB

I’ve tested this guide with a 32-bit version of Windows XP. A 64-bit version of Windows Vista can not be used!

You will find nearly everything you need on the 1000H XP Support DVD. The most important files are:

WINPE.ISO (in the root directory of the DVD)

EEEPCAH.GHO (in the “Recovery” folder of the DVD)

WINPE.ISO contains a lightweight version of Windows XP, called WinPE (Windows Preinstallation Environment) and can be booted for example from an USB Flash Drive. It also contains the file GHOST32.EXE, which actually is version 11.0 of the well known backup software Symantec Ghost.

EEEPCAH.GHO contains the image of the complete hard disk after factory install and can be restored using Symantec Ghost.

WinRAR will extract the content from WINPE.ISO to the hard disk. WinZip or 7-zip may also be used (not tested).

PeToUSB will format the USB Flash Drive, make it bootable and then copy the extracted files from WINPE.ISO to the drive.

1. Extract all files from WINPE.ISO

Create a new folder with the name WINPE in the root directory of a drive. In my example i will use drive D:\.

Open WinRAR and select the file WINPE.ISO from the Support DVD.

Click “Extract To” and choose D:\WINPE as destination path. Click “OK” and all files from WINPE.ISO will be extracted.

2. Choose Symantec Ghost as start application

This step is very important to start Ghost automatically after booting into the Windows Preinstallation Environment from the USB Flash Drive.

Doubleclick to open the file WINPESHL.INI located in D:\WINPE\I386\SYSTEM32 and change …

[launchApp]
AppPath=x:\EPCRecover.exe

… to …

[launchApp]
AppPath=x:\GHOST32.EXE

… and save the changes (Command: File > Save). Do not save the file under a new name or in another folder!

3. Format USB Flash Drive and copy files

Connect a USB Flash Drive with at least 4GB of storage to your PC and start PeToUSB. It should show up under Destination Drive. Check USB Removable, Enable Disk Format and Enable File Copy. Finally browse to the Source Path of the WinPE files, in this example located at D:\WINPE.

Click “Start” and answer the following two questions “Continue?” with “Yes”.

All existing volumes and data will be lost!

Depending on the write speed of your USB Flash drive it may take a while to copy all WinPE files. If everything goes well, the message “Operation Completed Successfully!” should appear. Click “OK” and close PeToUSB.

4. Copy image file

Copy the image file EEEPCAH.GHO from the “Recovery” folder on the 1000H XP Support DVD into the root directory of the USB Flash Drive. This may also take a while because the file size is 2.53GB.

5. Recovery process

Connect the USB Flash Drive to your Eee PC and turn on the Eee. Press “ESC” at the boot screen and you will be able to select the USB Flash Drive as your boot device from the boot menu.

After booting from USB Flash Drive, WinPE (Windows Preinstallation Environment) should start and finally Symantec Ghost.

Click “OK” and then “Local > Disk > From Image”. From the pulldown menu on the top choose your USB Flash Drive. It should be drive X:, because Windows assigned this drive letter during boot up. From here you can choose the image file EEEPCAH.GHO.

Now you have to select the destination drive. Of course this should be the Eee PCs hard drive. For my 1000H it’s drive 1 and the size is 76319MB. Please make sure to select the correct drive!

The next window will show you the destination drive details. Here you can change the partition layout or just click “OK” to keep the default settings. There will be one last question “Proceed with disk restore?”. If you click “Yes”, the process will be started.

The destination drive will be permanently overwritten.
All existing volumes and data will be lost!

After the restore process is finished, you have to reboot the Eee PC.

Notes:

This guide should only be used for the ASUS Eee PC 1000H with Windows XP and cannot be extended to other models because of the different storage solutions ( one or two SSDs, one HDD). The name(s) of the image file(s) in the “Recovery” folder on the Support DVD are also different.

Disclaimer:
I can not be held responsible for data loss or any damage to your hardware!

I just started this project on October 15, 2008, so please give me some time to translate some of my posts. Thanks.
